Parks and Recreations

Madison County offers many parks and recreational activities including Horseshoe Lake State Park. Visitors will also find the remains of a prehistoric Native American civilization at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Collinsville is the site of the world’s largest catsup bottle and several local history museums and numerous sites and districts on the National Register of Historic Places. Alton is the largest city in the Scenic Byway area with numerous museums and several historic districts. Olin Nature Preserve in Godfrey has 300 acres of tall-grass prairie and woodlands. Crossing the Clark Bridge over the Mississippi leads to the Riverlands Environmental Demonstration Area. The Scenic Byway travels to the river towns of Elsah and Grafton. The entire town of Elsah has been designated a historic district and Grafton is situated at the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers and is known as "The Winter Home of The Bald Eagle" due to the number of good eagle watching sites. The Myer Arboretum is a 38-acre arboretum contains native foliage, plants, and trees and allows visitors to experience the prairie of Illinois.

Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site (618) 346-5160
Giant earthen mounds, the remains of a prehistoric Native American civilization, are being preserved at this site. Visitors can explore the culture of 1400 A.D.

Chain of Rocks Bridge
The Chain of Rocks Bridge was the most famous crossing of Route 66 over the Mississippi. The name comes from a "chain" of rocks crossing the Mississippi just below the bridge — an exposure of bedrock creating rapids in the river. Originally a motor route, it now carries walking and biking trails over the river.

Local historians have put together this museum of local artifacts including a collection of Blum cowbells.

Gateway International Raceway
Gateway International Raceway hosts a NASCAR Busch Series event and a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on a 1.25-mile oval, and also has a quarter-mile drag strip that hosts an annual National Hot Rod Association event.

Glen Carbon Historical Museum (618) 288-1549
Artifacts from a Middle Woodland Village site and the Yanda Log Cabin are on display. The Museum has a series of books about local prehistory and history.

Horseshoe Lake State Park (618) 931-0270
Horseshoe Lake is a cutoff meander loop of the Mississippi River about four miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. It is the second-largest natural lake in Illinois after Lake Michigan. The lake, which is a National Natural Landmark, is named from its horseshoe shape. This 2,960-acre park offers bird watching, nature trails, camping, fishing, hunting and other recreational activities.

World's Largest Catsup Bottle
Built in 1949 and saved from destruction and restored in 1995, this piece of mid 20th century pop-culture Americana is a free drive-by roadside attraction.
